The San Antonio Caregiver’s Checklist: 5 Local Resources You Didn’t Know Existed

Being a caregiver is one of the most beautiful, and, let’s be honest, most exhausting, roles you will ever take on. If you’re living here in San Antonio and helping an aging parent or loved one navigate their golden years, you know exactly what I mean. You’re juggling doctor’s appointments, deciphering Medicare statements, and trying to make sure Mom or Dad is staying social and eating well, all while managing your own life.
At San Antonio 65, we talk to family caregivers every single day. We see the love you pour into your family, but we also see the "caregiver burnout" that can creep in when you feel like you’re doing it all alone. The good news? You aren't alone. San Antonio is a city with a big heart, and there are incredible local resources designed specifically to lift some of that weight off your shoulders.
I’ve put together a practical checklist of five local resources (plus a special bonus from us!) that every San Antonio caregiver should have in their back pocket. These aren't just names in a directory; these are organizations that can change the way you manage your day-to-day caregiving journey.
1. The "Starting Line": AACOG / Bexar Area Agency on Aging
If you only make one phone call this week, make it to the Alamo Area Council of Governments (AACOG). Specifically, you want to ask for the Bexar Area Agency on Aging (BAAA).
Think of them as your primary hub for senior resources. They offer what’s called "Caregiver Support," which isn't just a fancy title, it’s a lifeline. They can help you assess exactly what your loved one needs and, more importantly, what you need.
Are you exhausted? They can help coordinate "respite care," which gives you a much-needed break while a professional stays with your loved one. They also provide benefits counseling. If you’ve ever looked at a Medicare or Medicaid form and felt your head spin, these are the folks who can help you make sense of it all. They are local, they are experts, and most of their services are available at no cost to eligible seniors and their families.
2. More Than a Meal: Meals on Wheels San Antonio
Most people know about Meals on Wheels San Antonio for their food delivery, but did you know they offer so much more for the local caregiver?
Yes, they deliver nutritious, hot meals to homebound seniors, which is a huge help if you can't be there during the lunch hour. But they also offer specialized services for clients living with Alzheimer’s or dementia. For many seniors, the Meals on Wheels volunteer is the only person they see all day. That "friendly knock" provides a safety check that gives you peace of mind while you're at work or running errands.
In a city as large as ours, knowing that someone is checking in on your parent with a smile and a warm meal is a game-changer. It’s one less thing for you to worry about, and it helps your loved one maintain their independence at home.

3. The Helping Hands: Catholic Charities Senior Services
You don’t have to be Catholic to benefit from the incredible work Catholic Charities of San Antonio does for our community. They have a heart for our seniors that is truly inspiring.
One of my favorite programs they offer is "Adopt-A-Senior." This program pairs isolated seniors with volunteers who provide companionship. If you worry that your parent is getting lonely or needs a bit more social interaction than you can provide during a busy work week, this is a beautiful solution.
They also offer practical help like "Project Cool," which provides free box fans to seniors during our scorching San Antonio summers to prevent heat-related illness. These small, thoughtful services are what make our community special. They also host congregate meal sites across the city where seniors can go to enjoy a lunch and some arts and crafts or exercise classes. It’s about keeping the spirit high while keeping the body healthy.
4. The Paperwork Pros: University Health Senior Services
Let's talk about the "scary stuff": legal and medical paperwork. As a caregiver, you might find yourself needing to help your parent with a Medical Power of Attorney or an Advance Directive. It feels heavy, and often, people put it off because they don't know where to start or they're afraid of the cost.
University Health Senior Services actually offers free assistance with this specific paperwork. They help families walk through these important decisions so that everyone is on the same page before a crisis happens. Having these documents in order is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself as a caregiver. It removes the guesswork during medical emergencies and ensures your parent's wishes are respected.
While they help with the forms, they also focus on primary care tailored specifically for older adults. It’s a "one-stop shop" approach that treats the person, not just the symptoms.

5. The Digital Safe Haven: WellMed Charitable Foundation
If you are a caregiver who feels isolated, the WellMed Charitable Foundation has a resource you probably didn’t know existed: the Virtual Senior Center.
This is a fantastic online platform where seniors can take classes, play games, and socialize from the comfort of home. But beyond the fun stuff, WellMed is deeply committed to supporting the caregiver. They offer stress management workshops and support groups specifically for those of us caring for aging family members.
Sometimes, just hearing another person say, "I know exactly how you feel," is the best medicine. Their resources are designed to combat the burnout we mentioned earlier, giving you the emotional tools to keep going with compassion and strength.
The San Antonio 65 Bonus: Free Notary and Personal Guidance
Now, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention how we here at San Antonio 65 fit into your caregiver checklist. We are your local advocates, and our mission is simple: Education before sales.
One of the biggest hurdles caregivers face is getting documents notarized. Whether it's for insurance, a power of attorney, or funeral planning, finding a notary and getting your loved one to an office can be a major chore. That’s why we offer Free Notary Services for Seniors. We want to make this part of your life just a little bit easier.
Beyond that, we are here to help you navigate the confusing world of Medicare and final expense planning. Are you worried that your parents are paying too much for their prescriptions? We can help you look into programs like Extra Help or the Medicare Savings Program that can save local families thousands of dollars a year.
We aren't a giant, faceless corporation. We are your neighbors. We meet you at our local community events, in our office, or even in your home if that's what's easiest for you. We understand the specific needs of San Antonio families because we live here, too.

You’ve Got This (And We’ve Got You)
Caregiving is a marathon, not a sprint. The "checklist" above is meant to give you a few more tools in your kit so you can breathe a little easier. Whether it’s getting a meal delivered by Meals on Wheels, finding a support group through WellMed, or coming to see us for a free notary service, remember that you don't have to carry the load alone.
If you have questions about how to help your parent qualify for extra healthcare savings, or if you just want to talk to someone who understands the San Antonio senior resource landscape, give us a call or check out our blog for more tips.
